My Other Radish Plants

I thought for today I'd leave the windowsill radish on the windowsill for this post. For the past few days it has been pretty dull. It seems the radish root isn't getting much larger so I probably won't post about it until harvest time comes around. But for today I wanted to show some pictures of my other radish plants. These ones I have growing on my balcony. The balcony overall gets less direct sunlight and less sunlight overall than the windowsill. These plants took much longer to grow because of that. However, they have attained sizes much larger now but that may be due to the fact they are in a largish pot. They originally were planted between some green onion that I planted. These green onions were the bottoms of grocery store green onion. Here's an image when the radishes started sprouting. This was a little over a month ago.

As of today, I'm still waiting for the green onion to grow large enough to actually be able to eat but that's another story... But fast forward to now and check out how the radish plants have grown. some of the green onions are peeking out between the radishes too.

Is this even the same pot?

Wow, that was some explosive growth! The leaves are huge on these radishes! (That means more greens to eat too!) Unfortunately the radishes themselves aren't too big. There is one large radish as well as another radish that is bolting. First I'll show you the prize radish of the bunch:

I've started to notice my radishes are ending up very long. I wonder if it has anything to do with the soil? Maybe it's too soft? I'm not sure. I'll do some reading up on that later. I'm sure it has something to do with the soil or perhaps the pot is too crowded. Space is at a premium unfortunately in my case. But I did put my finger next to the radish for some scale. I'm hoping this radish will plump up some and become more round. There are a few other radishes developing nicely as well as others that clearly appear that they won't develop bulbs. Now for the radish plant that is bolting:

It might be a little hard to see which radish is bolting but it's in the middle. At the top there is a cluster of flowers developing. I'm going to go ahead and let the plant flower. I don't know if the flowers will actually get pollinated or not though. We shall see. Maybe I'll get some radish seeds.

Well, there's an update on my balcony radishes. I thought this would be an interesting change from the windowsill radishes. I'll post another update on their progress in the near future!

Windowsill Radishes - Day 31 - Death of the Cotyledons

The radishes have been growing for 31 days at this point from the day I plopped the seeds into the dirt. As of day 31, I've noticed that the cotyledons, or embryonic leaves, for both plants have finally started to yellow and die. I was curious how long these would last. They've grown very large throughout the life of the plants thus far too. The radish bulbs do seem to be plumping up nicely too. I'm excited to see what they look like on the day I decide to pluck them from the dirt. I'm really curious to see if there's much more to them than meets the eyes (above the dirt in this case).  Day 31 Side View Day 31 Top View Radish Close-up Good-bye Cotyledons

Windowsill Radishes - Day 15

Finally made it to posting about the current day's progress on the day of! The radish plants' growth appears to really be taking off now. I expect I'll start seeing large amounts of growth each day from here on out. I'm really excited to see if bulbs will start forming. That likely won't be for another week or two though (maybe longer). The second set of true leaves on the left plant are definitely apparent in these images. The leaves just look so nice and I'm really enjoying observing the growth each day. Perhaps the next step for me would be doing a time lapse video of growth.

Windowsill Radishes - Day 30

It's here, the fated day 30, and I can say these radishes definitely need some more time to grow. I suppose I could harvest them to see how they look and taste but I'm going to commit to another five days. Below are the usual shots of the plants.  Day 30 Side View Day 30 Top View The radishes after 30 days
